The outcome of the ladies short was something that no one predicted. World champion, Russian
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, is sitting in seventh place after an error-filled performance. Tuktamysheva doubled her regularly planned triple axel, doubled an intended triple lutz and then turned out of her triple toe-triple toe combination. She sat in the kiss-and-cry stunned at her marks and her placement. It was an usual sight to behold, as Tuktamysheva was almost entirely undefeated for most of last season, but the competition is not over and she could very well make a comeback in the free skate.
Currently sitting on top is
Ashley Wagner who won the short program by a solid seven points. Wagner skated with sass and style to "Hip Hip Chin Chin” which worked well for her, especially once she hit a beautiful triple flip-triple toe combination. It was all smiles for her today as none of her jumps were judged under-rotated. "I'm beyond ecstatic," Ashley told the
IceNetwork. "That was everything I know I am capable of as an athlete. To show that going up against a world champion…I can kind of keep my head on straight and deliver under pressure.” Japan’s Yuka Nagai also had a strong showing and she is currently in second place with teammate Kanako Murakami sitting in third.
The men’s event brought about more shock as Olympic Champion
Yuzuru Hanyu plummeted to sixth place after doubling an intended quad toe and having a jumping pass judged invalid. "Wow, it's been a long time since that has happened,” His coach, Brian Orser said to him in the kiss-and-cry. This event was highly anticipated as it is the first time that 2014 Olympic silver medalist,

Yuzuru Hanyu have faced-off since the Olympic Games.
Patrick Chan opened with a quad toe-triple toe combination and then fell on his triple axel and had his double lutz judged invalid. Chan faired better than Hanyu though and is currently in second place. Sneaking in and taking first place in the men’s short was Japan’s Daisuke Murakami who skated beautifully with only minor errors. American Adam Rippon fought hard in the short program and is in third place going into the free skate.
Sitting in first place in the pairs event is none other than the reigning world champions
Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. Their performance was not perfect, but they fought for each element and have a strong eight point lead going into the free skate. In second place is Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov from Russia and settling into third is another promising Canadian team Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro.
Even with a last minute change of programs in the short dance that took place only two weeks ago, it is not surprising to find
Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje currently resting in first place. Americans Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani are only two points behind and are in striking distance after a wonderful performance. Occupying third place are Russians Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev.
Skate Canada concludes tomorrow with the free dance, mens, ladies and pairs free skate. It should prove to be a revealing day as some of these skaters will rebound while others may continue in a downward spiral. Thankfully this is only the second stop on the Grand Prix circuit and skaters should have time to regroup before the next event.
